Hey oppo there is an opportunity at the company that i currently work at to move into another position that more lines up with my current path in school. They want a resume to be submitted and somehow i deleted my old one (it hadnt been updated since 2012 tho). So i was wondering if anyone had a good website to check out to help me write a new one. I found a pretty good source from Purdue University. Just wondering if there is another good source to check.

Thanks! :)

Beautiful car for your time

There are tons of ways to do it and lots of templates out in the googlesphere. But leave SOME white space on the page, but not very much. Try to keep job titles and bulleted items on one line each. And DO NOT go over one page unless you’ve got 20+ years of experience and are some kind of superstar. These are all mistakes that have gotten people moved to the bottom of the stack (or trash) in my 15 years of work.

Yes, one page is good.
Make it clear and easy to read. You have just a few seconds to get the attention of an employer/HR. If they don’t understand easily, it will be overlooked.
Pick a layout that works well presenting what you have to offer. Organize it by chronology to show your amount of experience for example. Alternately organize it by function to show specific skills. I can’t tell you what’s best, but chronological is often the easiest to set up.
Objective statements go in and out of fashion, but if you have one, make sure it’s true to you, relatable to the job, and not just a generic line.
Here’s the most difficult bit; don’t be upset if you aren’t chosen. There are a lot of jobs out there and it’s common to be overlooked. Often times it just means the person going over the applications doesn’t know what they’re looking for. You’ll find what you need eventually.

Good luck!

Look through the eyes of the Company / Person you’re interviewing with.

Understanding their business / needs....do your homework on them.

Then it’s all about you demonstrating you can create and deliver value for them.

Arrive early to the interview, too.

readability is key. recruiters spend mere seconds when they look at your resume for the first time. and in general, make sure you use keywords from the job description in your resume/cover letter. you should be customizing both to some extent every time you apply to a different job. the reason behind that is: many companies direct their online application forms to a robot who scans for keywords and sorts/filters based on them.

Two easy things: One, most important or relevant experiences at the top. Two, use heavy, quality paper for prit outs. Add a slight tint to the paper if you are mildly adventurous. For example, the paper I use has a slight blue-gray tint to it.

Probably good that you lost the old one; you’re farther along now and basing off the old would probably bias what you include.

What you feature depends a lot on your industry and level of experience. If you’re not applying to a lot of jobs at once, carefully emphasize the points articulated in the job description.

Be specific with your experience. Anyone can write “self-starter;” give brief powerful examples.

Different hiring managers use resumes differently. I personally (as a software team organizer) put little stock in the resume, and try to find evidence of the person’s growth and contributions, whether it’s code, meetups, social media, etc. I’m trying to hire a valuable member of the team, not the best resume writer.
